Match the GPU to your monitor refresh rate
Resolution tells you how many pixels must be drawn, while refresh rate tells you how
often the monitor can display a new image. A 60 Hz monitor can show up to 60 refreshes
per second. A 144 Hz display can refresh more than twice as often, and a 240 Hz monitor
can reward very high frame rates in suitable games.
For a 60 to 75 Hz screen, a budget or mainstream GPU can be enough for many games at
sensible settings. Spending more may improve minimum frame rates, ray tracing or future

for stronger 1080p performance and a CPU capable of preparing frames quickly.
Competitive games often use lower graphics settings to reduce latency and increase frame

Think about the games you actually play
A lightweight esports title and a demanding cinematic game do not place the same load on
the GPU. Competitive games may run at very high frame rates on modest hardware, while
detailed single player games can use more shaders, memory bandwidth, VRAM and ray tracing
resources.
Build a short list of your five most important games. Look for benchmarks at 1080p using
settings close to your own. Do not rely on one chart or a broad average that hides

How much VRAM is enough for 1080p?
Eight gigabytes of VRAM can be enough for many 1080p games, especially when settings are
chosen sensibly. Memory requirements vary by game, texture quality, mods and ray tracing.
Some demanding titles can use more, while others run well with less.
More VRAM does not automatically make a graphics card faster. The GPU core, memory
bandwidth, cache, architecture and driver all influence performance. A weaker card with
more memory can lose to a stronger card with less memory.

Ray tracing, upscaling and frame generation
Ray tracing can improve lighting, shadows and reflections, but it can also reduce frame
rate significantly. At 1080p, the performance cost may be easier to manage than at 4K,
but the benefit varies by game and scene.
Upscaling renders from a lower internal resolution and reconstructs a 1080p output.
This can improve frame rate, but image quality depends on the technology, quality mode
and game implementation. At 1080p, aggressive upscaling modes begin from a relatively low
internal resolution, so image quality should be judged carefully.

Balance the GPU with the CPU
1080p is more likely than 4K to expose a CPU limit because the GPU finishes each frame
more quickly. The processor must handle game logic, draw calls, physics and other work
before the graphics card can render the next frame.
Check GPU utilisation while playing. If the card regularly operates well below full use
and the frame rate does not improve after lowering graphics settings, the CPU or another
system component may be limiting performance. Background tasks, thermal throttling and
frame rate caps can produce similar symptoms.
Check power, size and cooling
Before ordering, measure the available GPU length, height and slot thickness inside the
case. Check whether front fans, drive cages or radiators reduce clearance. Small cases
may need a compact model with a shorter cooler.
Confirm the power supply wattage, quality and connector support. Board power is not total
system power because the CPU, drives, fans and other components also consume electricity.
